Discovery is trauma. Whether you found a text, a credit card bill, or walked in on them, your world has shifted. The natural instinct is to scream, confront, and demand answers. Resist this urge.
1. The 24-Hour Rule: Silence is Power
Knowledge is your only advantage right now. Once you confront, you lose the element of surprise. They will:
- Delete messages and photos.
- Change passwords.
- Hide assets.
- Gaslight you (" You're crazy, it's nothing").
Action: Act normal. It is the hardest performance of your life, but it is necessary to build your case.
2. Document Everything (Quickly)
// EVIDENCE_COLLECTION
Take screenshots of texts, emails, and call logs immediately. Send them to a secure cloud account or email that only you access.
Take photos of physical evidence (hotel receipts, gifts, notes).
Do not forward emails to yourself if it leaves a trail in "Sent" items. Take photos of the screen instead.
3. Protect Your Finances
Financial infidelity often accompanies sexual infidelity.
4. The Health Check
CRITICAL HEALTH WARNING
If your partner has been intimate with others, your health is at risk. Schedule a full STD/STI panel immediately. Physical safety comes first.
5. Consult a Family Law Attorney
Even if you hope to reconcile, you need to know your rights. In some states, infidelity typically impacts alimony or custody; in others ("no-fault"), it may not.
A PI can provide the evidence your attorney needs to negotiate a better settlement.
